City of Lichfield Concert Band

On Saturday we gathered again to spend a very enjoyable evening in the company of 44 members of the City of Lichfield Concert Band.  They were led by their very entertaining conductor, Mark Vause.

The band played a varied and exciting programme - including Grieg's March of the Trolls, Cornets-a-Go-Go and a selection from Les Miserables. The high point of the evening for some was the audience participation during The Beatles' Ticket to Ride!

It was great to see the church so full, and so many people having a lovely evening of music right here in the centre of Sutton Coldfield.

If you weren't able to join us this time please do come along to one or both of the remaining concerts this season.

Folk returned to Holy Trinity on Saturday with a fantastic performance by the award-winning duo - Gilmore & Roberts.

Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts combined the best of folk, acoustic and indie music with their trademark vocal harmonies.

It was great to see that the audience of regular attenders of Holy Trinity Friends' events was swelled by folk fans from around the region.

Yet another successful Folk Night at Holy Trinity!

Drama in church! The Just William Lady...

On Saturday the church was transformed into a theatre as we were held spellbound by the dramatic skills of Alison Neil - 'the Just William Lady'.

In four acts Alison took the 'stage' with her one-woman show, a lively and affectionate look at the life of Richmal Crompton.

Richmal Crompton was at the centre of a large and eccentric family; there was the brother who ran away to Africa, the grandfather who drank acid, the nephew and niece who were kidnapped, and the mother who saved Richmal's life. There was also Tommy…Richmal's nephew and the real-life inspiration for William Brown.

Alison was poignant, expressive and very funny!

So now we know that our newly re-ordered church works magnificently as a theatre. Maybe this will just be the first of many plays and dramatic performances in the future.

Concert - Di Xiao

On Saturday 3rd December we were treated to a concert by the exceptional international concert pianist, Di Xiao.

Through a wide range of classical pieces Di Xiao conjured up vivid images of water, dance and moonlight.

It was particularly wonderful to hear the pieces of Chinese music which would have been new to most of us.

It was lovely to see so many people there to enjoy this 'Friends of Holy Trinity' concert in our beautiful church.

If you missed Di Xiao this time, watch out for more concerts in future years (we hope!). And have a look at the list of other concerts and events in our 2016-17 season - there's sure to be something that appeals.

Royal Town Gala Concert with Enigma Brass Ensemble and Paul Carr

On Saturday night we kicked off our 2016/7 Friends' Concert season with our 2016 Royal Town Gala concert.

We were treated to a wide range of rousing and moving music in the setting our our beautiful newly re-ordered church.

The talented local group Enigma Brass Ensemble took us on a trip which included tributes to the Carpenters, a medley from West Side Story and a wonderful 'Last Night of the Proms' feel finale!

Acclaimed organist, Paul Carr, showed us what an amazing range of different music can be brought forth from our church organ. Some familiar, and some new to many of us, these pieces of music filled the wonderful space that we enjoy at Holy Trinity.

If you missed this concert we do hope you'll join us for the next one on 3rd December. And by then our new underfloor heating will be up and running!

Intimate Theatre

Intimate Theatre provided a fitting finale to our 3rd season of events.

Hot-footing it directly from two sell-out performances at Lichfield Festival, the company presented "The Heiress" by Ruth & Augustus Goetz and based on the 19th century novel "Washington Square" by Henry James.

The play revolved around Catherine, a shy, naive girl - heir to a considerable fortune but despised by her father. Into her life came Morris, a penniless, handsome and fascinating man. the plot questioned whether his devotion and love for this unhappy girl was genuine, or if his attentions had another motive. A fascinating story with a great twist at the end!

The event was excellently attended and raised over £900. Special thanks to CM2000 for supporting the night.

Drawing Room Opera

On Saturday 14th May we were greatly entertained by Fran Ambrose, Ailsa Cochrane and Harriet Hunter who together made up 'Drawing Room Opera'.

Between them they treated us to a selection of pieces from Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Mascagni, Bizet, and Gilbert and Sullivan.  Even those of us unfamiliar with opera were captivated by their expressive acting and superb voices. Their hilarious rendition of 'Three Little Maids from School' won't soon be forgotten!

Will Pound & Eddy Jay's Folk Night

On Saturday we were wonderfully entertained by the 'dynamic and exhilarating' duo of Will Pound and Eddy Jay in a 'full-on folk' evening.

As promised the pair 'read each other instinctively, forging a path to new folk sounds with harmonica and accordion together as one instrument'. There were many converts to their sound...

A great evening of real ale, fabulous music and even Morris Dancing! And also some talk of the new re-ordered Holy Trinity Church being an exciting new venue for Folk Music in Sutton Coldfield in the future.

Derwent Harp Ensemble

On Saturday 6th February 2016, we were privileged to hear the wonderful Derwent Harp Ensemble performing a wide range of beautiful and uplifting melodies. They were led by Helen-Elizabeth Naylor who kept us all entertained with her descriptions of the various tunes and their traditional origins.

The concert, in aid of the Friends of Holy Trinity, was held in the Trinity Centre, because of the current re-ordering work in the church.  Rev. John Routh, Rector of Holy Trinity, invited the ensemble to come back when the church is re-opened so that we can all enjoy the harps again with the added benefits of the wonderful church acoustics.

We were entertained by the accomplished singing of the Sutton Coldfield Chamber Choir, under the direction of Richard Mason and accompanied by our organ. We enjoyed the trumpet skills of Dan Robertson, and the superb organ playing of John Pryer.

Birmingham radio legend Les Ross MBE hosted the event, with the accomplished BMOS Musical Theatre Company performing show tunes from musicals including South Pacific and Carousel. Classical pianist and Director of the BCU International Piano Academy Di Xiao presented a demanding programme that included Debussy and Schubert and Birmingham-based strings ensemble Enigma similarly delighted us with a varied range of pieces.

Sutton Coldfield Chamber Choir
Sutton Coldfield Chamber Choir

On Saturday 21 June - the longest day of the year - we were very pleased to welcome to church the Sutton Coldfield Chamber Choir plus special guests, for an evening of beautiful choral music.

Sutton Coldfield Chamber Choir has been providing entertainment and giving charity concerts in the Birmingham area for almost a decade.

Led by choir director, Gordon Thornett, their repertoire spanned more than four centuries and covered a range of different musical styles, from Rachmaninov to Rutter.

We were also delighted to welcome special guests, the talented Gospel Choir of Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls, who brought us bang up to date with a rousing gospel version of 'Happy' by Pharell Williams.

We are very grateful to CM2000 who kindly sponsored the event.

The wonderful mid-summer's eve event was a fitting finale to the Friends of Holy Trinity inaugural season.
