Heritage Open Day – celebrating ‘Extraordinary women’!
September 15 @ 10:30 am - 4:00 pm
Our theme? ‘Extraordinary women!
How far would you go to get the vote? Slash a painting? Commit arson? Refuse to pay your taxes? Using the example of Miss Rhoda Anstey, principal of Anstey College on Chester Road, Pyn Stockman and Mandy Ross of Secret City Arts will explore local campaigns for women’s suffrage, a hundred years after (some) women first gained the right to vote.
Through a bit of dressing up and discussion the public will be invited to think about what influenced people’s position on the issue and where the Church of England and other denominations stood on the issue of women’s suffrage. Artists will explore the national theme of “Extraordinary women” with us looking at some from our local area.
Come and find out about:
Agnes Bracken – the first historian of Sutton Coldfield, who published The history of the Forest and Chase of Sutton Coldfield in 1860, styling her authorship “by a lady” after the manner of Jane Austen! Her pew in Holy Trinity Church was on the south side of church.
Sarah Holbeche – she wrote a memoir of her early life in Sutton and inspired her nephew Richard to write his much later on. The family worshipped at Holy Trinity in a pew in the gallery above Agnes Bracken’s. Sarah also gave one of the stained glass windows in the church.
Emma Barton – a nationally acclaimed photographer lived at Four Oaks. We will re-create a Victorian studio in church! Come and dress up and take your family portrait.
Free entry! All welcome – please come and join us.
