Summer's here ... real summer, sun and all! The sustained heat over the last couple of weeks has been amazing. It's continued long enough that the church has actually warmed up. Now that the temperature outside has fallen a little I'm experiencing something unusual ... it's warmer inside church than out!
We spend so much of the year with a cold church building that it's come as a bit of a shock. Most of the year I'm grateful to be wearing robes, with pullovers concealed beneath them. But over the last few weeks I've been desperate to get the robes off the instant a service has ended ... they're simply too hot.
I'm not really complaining though. Heat is tiring, and for some it's a struggle; but for most of us it's a pleasant change. It brings to mind summers past ... days spent on the beach, evenings having a quiet drink in a pub garden, nights sleeping with windows open, waking to birdsong early in the morning. All of it seen through rose-tinted spectacles of course!
So, to all ... enjoy the summer whilst it's here. Experience says it will be all too brief, and we'll be muttering about the cold and damp soon enough!
