Music for the Summer

Church choirs traditionally take a summer break along with everyone else, but services must go on, so we do practise here and there and of course there are lots of weddings where we have been asked to lead the congregation. While we might not be too ambitious in our anthems during this time (always a bit tricky ensuring there are enough people present!) we have one or two different occasions like the all-age service which Susie will be leading on 8th August and we hope the band will play for that too.

Wedding numbers have increased this year as have those specifically booking the choir. This is often to lead the congregational hymns, and my dream is to encourage couples to be a bit more adventurous in their choices! I think that may take some time. "Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising" (Sing Hosanna) seems to be number one this year, with "Ave Maria" top for music to be sung during the signing of the registers - Schubert, Gounod and Beyonce versions have all been requested this year!!

Once September arrives the junior choir will resume practices on 6th Sept (6.30-7pm). It would be great to have some more joining in this - age 7 upwards. Our two current members are very enthusiastic and singing fantastically, but we really need some younger ones to get started now. Do ask me if you know of any boy or girl who might be interested - it's great free musical training!
